It’s not easy to be patient in a world of noise. Twitter, Facebook, email, texts, and a 24/7 news cycle all create a sense of urgency that compels people to act for actions sake, forsaking the peculiar combination of extreme patience and decisiveness that Charlie Munger, vice-chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and long time partner of Warren Buffett, counsels. Individual investors are not alone in their frantic navigation of the markets. The global economy has fallen prey to this rapid-fire decision making process as well.

The Super Committee Failure: Stop Yawning, It’s Getting Serious!

As we turned to celebrate Thanksgiving, a holiday based on the ideals of compromise and cooperation, the 12 member bipartisan “Super Committee” failed to reach agreement on how to help solve our country’s looming fiscal crisis. With both parties focused on winning next year’s Presidential election, there was little incentive for an honest effort at making progress now. Though expected by most, the Super Committee’s failure still offers cause for serious concern. At Balentine, the “Super Committee” outcome has been one of the keys risks we continue to monitor. While the European debt crisis poses a very obvious threat and grabs the headlines every day, the potential impact of the Super Committee’s failure is a bit more nebulous, requiring a more in depth examination.
